Introduzione
La valvulopatia cronica è una cardiopatia acquisita comune nei cani, e può rappresentare fino al 75% dei casi di insufficienza cardiaca congestizia in questa specie. La valvulopatia cronica, che può anche essere chiamata “valvulopatia degenerativa”, “valvulopatia mixomatosa” o “endocardiosi”, provoca l’ispessimento e la malformazione progressivi dei lembi valvolari del cuore, con la valvola mitrale più spesso colpita. In molti casi, sono presenti alterazioni simili sulla valvola tricuspide.
