Introduzione
Ascite è un termine usato per descrivere l’accumulo di fluido libero nella cavità peritoneale. In base a conte cellulari, proteine totali, peso specifico e contenuto cellulare, il fluido può essere classificato come trasudato (puro o modificato) o come essudato (Tabella 1). In definitiva, questa classificazione può essere utile per identificare l’eziologia dell’ascite e impostare un trattamento adeguato. I versamenti chilosi o pseudochilosi, emorragici, biliari, neoplastici, e l’uroaddome sono essudati specifici che molti veterinari preferiscono considerare diversi dall’ascite vera e propria (1).

- L’ascite può essere classificata come uno fra numerosi tipi di fluidi, più spesso costituiti da trasudati puri o modificati o da essudati. Questa classificazione aiuta a restringere un elenco di diagnosi differenziali molto ampio in base all’eziologia primaria.
- Per essere certi della classificazione, occorre prelevare e analizzare il fluido ascitico, ma questo fornisce raramente una diagnosi definitiva, senza un’ulteriore valutazione diagnostica completa.
- Insufficienza cardiaca congestizia, neoplasia, peritonite infettiva felina e malattia epatica sono tra le cause più comuni di ascite nei gatti.
- L’addominocentesi terapeutica può essere un’alternativa vantaggiosa per alleviare il disagio in molti casi di ascite. Si raccomanda un trattamento specifico per la causa primaria.
