Introducción
La ascitis es el término que se utiliza para describir el acúmulo de líquido libre en la cavidad peritoneal. Las características del líquido, incluyendo el recuento celular, las proteínas totales, la densidad y el tipo de células, permiten clasificarlo como trasudado (puro o modificado) o exudado (Tabla 1). Esta clasificación puede ayudar a determinar la etiología de la ascitis y, por tanto, orientar el tratamiento. Muchos veterinarios prefieren diferenciar la ascitis verdadera de otros líquidos como la efusión quilosa o pseudoquilosa, así como de la efusión hemorrágica, biliosa, neoplásica y del uroabdomen (1).

- La ascitis se puede clasificar según las características del líquido, siendo el trasudado puro, el trasudado modificado y el exudado los líquidos más frecuentes. Esta clasificación ayuda a limitar la larga lista de diagnósticos diferenciales de la etiología primaria.
- El líquido ascítico se debe obtener y analizar con la finalidad de clasificar la ascitis, aunque alcanzar el diagnóstico definitivo requiere una evaluación diagnóstica completa con la realización de más pruebas.
- Entre las causas más frecuentes de ascitis en el gato se encuentran la insuficiencia cardiaca congestiva, las neoplasias, la peritonitis infecciosa felina y la enfermedad hepática.
- La abdominocentesis terapéutica puede ser una buena opción para aliviar el malestar en muchos (pero no todos) casos de ascitis. Se debe instaurar un tratamiento específico para la causa primaria.
