Read
Uroperitoneum
- Usually noted in the first 48 hours of life
- Sometimes can be slightly older foal if small urinary leak
- Syndrome in older foal (several weeks old) associated with ascending infection from umbilicus
Clinical Signs
- Low grade abdominal discomfort
- Straining and abdominal distension
- Dribbling urine or anuria (note that may be able to make a stream)
- Collapse and death!
Differential Diagnosis
- Retained meconium
- Other gastrointestinal disorders
- In older foal simple septic umbilicus
Diagnostic Strategy
- Lateral radiographic view (contrast)
- Methylene blue (fluorescein)
- Paracentesis abdominis (creatinine level of more than twice serum level is diagnostic)
- Cystoscopy (adults)
Transabdominal Ultrasound
Emergency Management
- Uroperitoneum is a medical but NOT a surgical emergency
- Foal MUST be stabilised before GA
- Hyperkalaemia (cardiac arrest) should be corrected by administration of normotonic or hypertonic saline
- Simultaneously peritoneal drainage should be carried out
(reduce respiratory embarrassment) [...]
