Introduzione
I cani più anziani presentano spesso sfide mediche complesse, multisistemiche e i test ematologici rientrano negli accertamenti diagnostici accurati da eseguire in clinica. In effetti, la diagnosi precoce della malattia è spesso fondamentale per il successo del trattamento e/o una qualità di vita migliore nei nostri pazienti geriatrici. Tuttavia, i test ematologici annuali o semestrali possono consentire non solo l’identificazione precoce dei problemi ma anche la valutazione delle tendenze e il monitoraggio della risposta sistemica al trattamento della malattia. La creazione dei dati di base può essere preziosa per valutare i successivi aumenti di un particolare parametro ematologico, soprattutto quando gli aumenti sono incrementali nel tempo. Un piccolo aumento nell’entità può non essere così significativo come la tendenza a lungo termine di un determinato parametro. È inoltre prudente eseguire gli accertamenti ematologici di base prima di iniziare la terapia farmacologica e valutare in particolare la funzione renale ed epatica. Si raccomanda di includere nei test ematologici nell’animale geriatrico un esame emocromocitometrico completo, un profilo biochimico sierico o plasmatico che includa gli elettroliti e l’analisi delle urine. Ulteriori test possono poi essere indicati sulla base delle irregolarità riscontrate nei dati di laboratorio e/o nei riscontri dell’esame obiettivo.

I test ematologici nell’animale geriatrico devono includere un esame emocromocitometrico completo, un profilo biochimico sierico o plasmatico che includa gli elettroliti e l’analisi delle urine, aggiungendo ulteriori test, se necessario.

È prudente effettuare i test ematologici prima di iniziare la terapia farmacologica nel cane anziano. In particolare, si raccomanda di valutare la funzionalità renale ed epatica.

La creatinina è l’indicatore più affidabile del
GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate – Velocità di Filtrazione Glomerulare), mentre le concentrazioni di azoto ureico possono essere influenzate dalle diete iperproteiche e dall’eventuale emorragia gastrointestinale e disidratazione. -
Eventuali aumenti degli enzimi epatici nei cani anziani vanno sempre investigati. Questi aumenti potrebbero non essere direttamente correlati all’epatopatia primaria, bensì riflettere la risposta del fegato ad altre malattie sistemiche o metaboliche.
