    Introdução

    No Reino Unido, a principal causa da rinite fúngica é o Aspergillus fumigatus. Noutras zonas do mundo, foram identificados vários fungos, que incluem diferentes estirpes de Aspergillus, Penicillium e Scedosporium. A patologia subjacente é a rinite destrutiva. O A. fumigatus é ubíquo no meio ambiente, embora apresente maiores concentrações em situações específicas, tais como no feno/palha húmidos e/ou armazenados em más condições ou na compostagem de aparas de erva. Ainda não é perfeitamente claro o motivo pelo qual alguns cães evidenciam uma infecção activa com desenvolvimento de um grande número de hifas e colónias de fungos, enquanto a maioria hospeda simplesmente alguns esporos normalmente inalados.

    Efectivamente, alguns factores predisponentes foram implicados num número reduzido de casos, tais como trauma, septicémia ou outras doenças concomitantes (incluindo neoplasia nasal). A imunodeficiência grave, um dos principais factores da aspergilose humana no Ocidente, não foi ainda documentada no cão nem no gato. O decréscimo de imunidade celular constatada na aspergilose canina pode dever-se à acção do fungo e não a uma deficiência imunitária pré-existente no animal.

    A primeira descrição desta afecção data de 1905. A aspergilose é actualmente reconhecida como uma causa do corrimento nasal crónico no cão. No entanto, antes de se aconselhar um determinado tratamento, esta afecção deve ser diferenciada de uma série de outras condições. Quando se procede ao diagnóstico por rinoscopia e por imagiologia, a infecção está já bem estabelecida. Esta situação deve-se, provavelmente, ao facto do corrimento nasal (principal sinal evidenciado) ter sido, durante bastante tempo, lambido das narinas exteriores ou aspirado no sentido caudal para a nasofaringe e engolido antes do animal ser apresentado à consulta.     • As infecções fúngicas nasais são a principal causa da rinite destrutiva no cão. No entanto não são perfeitamente claros os factores que favorecem a instalação do processo infeccioso.
    • Apesar dos sinais clínicos poderem ser semelhantes aos de outras patologias, a realização de exames complementares rigorosos permite estabelecer um diagnóstico definitivo.
    • O sinal clínico mais comum é o corrimento nasal crónico.
    • O método terapêutico mais eficaz ainda é descutível. Sabe-se, contudo, que sem tratamento a infecção pode revelar-se fatal.
