    Introduzione

    La radiografia è lo strumento più utilizzato nell'approccio, nello screening e nella diagnosi della patologia toracica. Il vantaggio principale, rispetto ad altre tecniche più recenti, è la capacità intrinseca di rilevare la morfologia delle strutture toraciche. La sua sensibilità e specificità può essere aumentata con l'uso di tecniche speciali, con l’uso di mezzi di contrasto ed esposizioni di follow-up. I suoi limiti sono l'incapacità di distinguere strutture aventi la stessa densità radiografica e il fatto di essere la rappresentazione di una struttura tridimensionale in un mezzo bidimensionale. Come per tutte le tecniche di diagnostica per immagini, non consente di valutare la funzionalità, sebbene sia possibile stimare quest'ultima in base all'aspetto radiografico o grazie a procedure speciali come le tecniche con mezzo di contrasto.
