The hallmark clinical features of esophageal dysphagia include regurgitation (solids or liquids), hypersalivation, odynophagia (painful swallowing) and coughing (secondary to aspiration). Importantly, regurgitation and vomiting can occur concurrently e.g., vomiting with secondary esophagitis, hiatal hernia, and must be differentiated from the signs of oropharyngeal dysphagia. Esophageal disease may be part of a systemic disease in animals manifesting signs of dysphagia only, underscoring the importance of a comprehensive systemic evaluation in affected animals. [...]
