Las características clínicas típicas de la disfagia esofágica incluyen la regurgitación (sólidos o líquidos), hipersalivación, odinofagia (dolor al tragar) y tos (secundaria a aspiración). Lo que es más importante es que puede haber regurgitación y vómitos al mismo tiempo, p. ej. vómitos con una esofagitis secundaria, hernia de hiato, que deben diferenciarse de los signos de una disfagia orofaríngea.
