El control de la posición y movimiento del globo ocular es complejo e implica varias estructuras y vías neurales interconectadas. Este control puede dividirse en dos categorías:
- Mecanismos de fijación de la mirada que estabilizan un objeto de interés en el área de la retina con mayor agudeza visual en lugar de cambios constantes de la posición de la cabeza (p. ej. cuando un animal corre o se desplaza).
- Mecanismos de desplazamiento de la mirada que permiten el movimiento de la mirada entre distintos objetos de interés dentro del campo visual sin necesidad de mover la cabeza.
La interrupción del funcionamiento normal de las vías implicadas en estos mecanismos puede causar movimientos oculares involuntarios, que se traducen clínicamente en oscilaciones inapropiadas, de aquí para allá, de los ojos. [...]
