The priority, when presented with a bleeding dog, is stabilisation. The major body systems (cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological) should be assessed and supportive care administered. This should be prioritised over any investigation, although samples can be taken and tests performed concurrent with stabilising treatment. Many bleeding patients have evidence of cardiovascular instability, commonly requiring fluid therapy to treat hypovolaemia. Generally, bolus fluid therapy with 5-10ml/kg of an isotonic crystalloid such as Hartmann’s over approximately 10-20 minutes is beneficial if hypovolaemia is suspected. A repeat physical examination can then be performed to check for improvement in cardiovascular status, with further boluses administered as necessary.
