It is intuitive that diet is highly likely to be a major determinant of intestinal health and disease. This principle is well understood in human medicine and many dietary associations with disease are recognized and can be readily managed. Gluten intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), infectious food poisoning (e.g. campylobacter, enterotoxigenic E. coli), and botulism are just a few better known examples. The relationship between the horse’s diet and intestinal disease is less well established. This presentation will review the aetiology and prevention of known feed-related intestinal disease and will speculate on future developments in this area of equine science.
