Prebiotics and probiotics have the potential to influence the intestinal microflora in a way that is advantageous for preventing disturbed microbial fermentation and, thus, for promoting health and wellbeing of the host. Numerous prebiotics and probiotics are available on the marked while scientific studies in horses are clearly limited. The state of knowledge on the assumed mode of action and on measurable effects in horses has already been summarized earlier (Julliand 2006; Julliand and Zeyner 2008).
