It is likely that horse-keepers have recognized the importance of diet in maintaining the health of their horses for many centuries. In 1857 Mr John Gamgee, lecturer in veterinary medicine at Edinburgh university observed1 that for horses “…too much hay and, an excessive quantity of corn, may induce violent indigestion and gripes... new hay and new oats combined are proverbially known to be injurious.” In the 1950’s in the UK the British Horse Society’s Manual of Horsemanship2 defined “the rules of good feeding.” These were nine rules to help advise young and inexperienced horse owners how to safely feed their horses. They include advice that we would recognize today such as “feed little and often,” and “make no sudden changes in the type of food or the feeding routine.” Many of these rules stand the test of time!
