Introduction
While infectious diseases are tremendously important in horses, infection control usually receives limited attention and efforts are usually reactionary, short-term responses to outbreaks or other high-profile events. The term ‘biosecurity’ if often used in reference to equine farms and hospitals, yet it is actually a misnomer. Biosecurity involves measures to prevent access of pathogens onto farms. This might be a practical goal in a small percentage of closed secure breeding farms, yet it is impractical for much of the equine industry, where movement of horses and personnel (and correspondingly their pathogens) is common, poorly controlled and necessary. The issues are even more profound with hospitals since it is assumed that infectious agents are frequently present in horses admitted to a facility. Therefore, the emphasis should be on ‘infection control’, a series of principles and practices to reduce the transmission and impact associated with the inevitable presence of infectious agents on a farm or in a hospital.
