Working as an equine nurse in Qatar can be demanding, surprising, educational and inspiring. The challenging cultural differences experienced while living and working in an Arabic Muslim country, such as the language barrier and difficulty communicating, variations in interpreting religious teachings, and working as part of a large multinational team, are counteracted by the enjoyment of working in an extremely safe community with a very low crime rate and a focus on strong family values.
When relocating to work in a Middle Eastern country it is important to ensure a good understanding of the local culture, values and traditions. Knowledge of how to dress appropriately so as not to offend Muslim co-workers and clients is essential. Understanding how Islam affects daily life in ways such as the requirements for prayer and the expectations of both Muslims and non-Muslim residents during Ramadan is important to ensure a harmonious relationship.
Embracing cultural differences with respect and open- mindedness make working and living in the Middle East enjoyable and rewarding. Anyone considering a career in this region will benefit from coming with intentions not only to improve the lives of their patients and clients but also to improve themselves. Exposure to a different culture is a great way to develop understanding and openness.
