While the promise of regeneration has centred on the use of embryonic or embryonic-like cells because of their ability to generate every tissue in the body, the development of stem cell therapies in the veterinary field has involved undifferentiated stem or progenitor cells recovered from a variety of mesenchymal tissues, most commonly adult bone marrow and fat. Generally, differences between these products are most marked when comparing products where the preparation protocol differs. Thus there are large differences in the nature of the cells produced between those products that are ‘minimally manipulated’ (e.g. many of the fat-derived cell products; neat bone marrow and ‘BMAC’ [bone marrow aspirate concentrate]) and those with enriched stem cell products where culture is employed ...
