Indications for renal ultrasound include axotaemia, haematuria, pollakiuria, dysuria, uroliths or palpable left renal enlargement [1–6]. In horses with nonspecific clinical signs, renal abnormalities may be found during routine abdominal ultrasound [1,7]. A low frequency (2–5 MHz) transducer is necessary to evaluate adult kidneys due to their deep location. Rectal transducers are insufficient for transcutaneous imaging. Ideally, the hair is clipped with No. 40 blades, the skin washed and ultrasound gel applied. Alcohol saturation is acceptable in appropriate cases, but subtle findings may be missed.
