Periodontal disease is a destructive process of the support structures of the tooth that is known to be progressive and can lead to the premature loss of teeth. The structures that are affected by the process are the gingiva, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone and cementum of the tooth. Periodontal disease can further be broken down into two subcategories, the first of which is gingivitis and the second periodontitis. Gingivitis is considered the reversible form of the periodontal disease process. This component does not affect the alveolar bone or demonstrate attachment loss of the tooth.
