Equine back pain requires a thorough orthopaedic evaluation, proactive treatment of all orthopaedic issues, and the effective medical and physical management of back pain. Manual therapies are frequently employed in the management of actual and suspected back pain in the horse. Unfortunately owners are frequently unaware of the qualifications, methods and abilities of their chosen ‘back person’, often relying on word of mouth, fashion and optimistic assessments of outcome. A vet will normally only be contacted when these methods have failed.
