Manipulative therapies encompass a range of therapeutic techniques from spinal manipulation through to mobilisation of spinal and soft tissues. In order to describe the techniques, this talk will briefly present the concept of the spinal segment comprising two articulating vertebrae. Externally applied forces (by the physiotherapist) can be used to affect movement within and/or between spinal segments. These therapeutic forces can be high velocity thrusts at the extremes of physiological (e.g. cervical rotation) range of movement.
