Subchondral bone cysts in the stifle are most frequently found in the medial femoral condyle (MFC) and can cause lameness, especially in young horses [1–4]. Thoroughbreds [5] and Quarter Horses [6] are most commonly affected. Warmbloods are less affected. The pathogenesis of subchondral cystic lesions (SCL) in the MFC remains speculative, but trauma and osteochondrosis are commonly involved. Articular cartilage damage alone will not induce a SCL, but injuries which also cause subchondral bone damage, can result in the development of a SCL [7] ...
