Numerous changes have occurred since 1969 when the first analysis of perioperative equine fatalities revealed a mortality rate of 1.7% [1]. The volume of information available to improve both medical and veterinary anaesthetic and surgical practice has burgeoned with subsequent effects on the skills and expertise of veterinary specialists.
