Introduction
Chronic intestinal diseases are common in small animals and can present a considerable challenge to the clinician. The main problem is that clinical signs – which may include vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss – are shared by many conditions that have either a primary or secondary effect on the gastrointestinal tract. A less obvious, but significant problem, is that intestinal disease may be completely overlooked in an animal with weight loss and no obvious vomiting or diarrhea in the history. This paper explains how laboratory procedures can form a key part of a practical approach to the diagnosis and successful management of chronic intestinal diseases in dogs and cats. [...]
