Introduzione
Gli starnuti sono un disturbo alla presentazione straordinariamente comune nei gatti, ed è importante che il veterinario abbia una buona visione d’insieme delle possibili cause quando visita un gatto o un gruppo di gatti affetti, e conosca al tempo stesso le varie alternative terapeutiche e diagnostiche disponibili.
Gli starnuti rappresentano tentativi dell’organismo di eliminare le sostanze irritanti dal naso, e sono generalmente un processo involontario. Alcune cause degli starnuti sono autolimitanti, come ad esempio l’esposizione a una cantina polverosa, mentre altri possono essere più progressivi e anche limitativi per la vita. In pratica, l’Autore ritiene che abbia generalmente senso classificare i gatti che starnutiscono come casi “facili” o casi “complessi” al momento di stabilire le indagini da condurre; i casi “facili” sono tipicamente rappresentati dai gattini con lievi infezioni delle vie respiratorie superiori, mentre i casi “complessi” sono rappresentati dai gatti con malattia cronica che non si risolve in alcuna maniera o dai casi in cui l’eziologia rimane sfuggente, nonostante test approfonditi. Questo documento offre una breve panoramica per il veterinario che si trovi a visitare un gatto che starnutisce.

- L’imaging, la biopsia ed eventualmente la rinoscopia, sono le indagini che portano più facilmente alla diagnosi, mentre la PCR (reazione a catena della polimerasi – Polymerase Chain Reaction) può essere utile per confermare una causa infettiva cronica.
