Ventricular ectopics are beats that originate from an ectopic focus within the ventricles. When several ventricular ectopics occur in a succession (four or more) a ventricular rhythm occurs. Some ventricular arrhythmias are life threatening and require immediate treatment, others have a benign nature and do not require treatment; and others are created by subsidiary pacemakers during bradyarrhythmias and their suppression is contraindicated. When deciding whether or not to treat a ventricular arrhythmia it is firstly very important to evaluate the type, frequency and complexity of the ventricular arrhythmia. It is also of crucial importance to put the arrhythmia into the overall case context. The patient’s haemodynamic status, any underlying cardiac disease, and the presence of clinical signs, will be important decision making factors. The old maxim “treat the patient and not the ECG” should be borne in mind more than ever when faced with a patient with ventricular arrhythmia. [...]
