The year 2000 was not only a shift towards the new Millennium. In the last quarter of the 20th century, the research on cancer brought a deep knowledge in to the cellular, molecular and genomic mechanisms of the disease. The process of tumorigenesis is a multi-step process having for basis genetic deviations that drive the teleological transformation of a benign cell into an aggressive derived heteronym. There are more than 100 types of cancer, with specific subtypes on different organs, but seems they all share common characteristics. These common traits were collected by Hanahan and Weinberg in what is the most cited work in the last times and known as the hallmarks of cancer.
