La dilatación-torsión gástrica (DTG) es una emergencia quirúrgica y médica que amenaza la vida. La crisis aguda se caracteriza por una distensión y torsión gástrica severa que comprime vascularización crítica causando isquemia gástrica, deterioro del retorno venoso y gasto cardíaco deficiente. Esto conduce a shock hipovolémico, isquemia miocárdica, arritmias cardíacas, desequilibrio electrolítico y necrosis visceral, entre otros.
Los perros de razas grandes y gigantes, con peso insuficiente o con un cociente de profundidad respecto a anchura torácica tienen un mayor riesgo de sufrir DTG. Este riesgo aumenta con la edad. Los perros de raza pura grandes y gigantes tienen una probabilidad del 24% y el 21,6% de sufrir DTG en algún momento de su vida, respectivamente [Glickman et al. 2000]. Además, ciertas razas, como el Gran Danés, tienen hasta un 40% de riesgo de GDV. En consecuencia, es habitual que en la clínica se lleven a cabo intervenciones preventivas. [...]
