Diabetes mellitus is one of the two most common endocrine disorders in cats. It is a heterogeneous group of disorders in which insulin production is reduced or in which tissue cells are resistant to the effects of insulin, resulting in impaired glucose homeostasis. From a clinical perspective, regardless of cause, diabetes mellitus (DM) can be challenging to diagnose and treat in cats because of stressinduced hyperglycemia.
The prevalence of this condition has increased over time and frequency of occurrence also appears to vary with geographic location. British and Australian Burmese being significantly over-represented by more than 3 fold. Predisposition to high fasting glucose and low glucose tolerance appears to be inherited as an autosomal, not fully penetrant trait in these Burmese. [...]
