Igual que para otras especialidades veterinarias, la historia reciente, viajes y vacunas son importantes para que el oftalmólogo pueda determinar si el ‘ojo rojo’ podría deberse a una panuveítis infecciosa o a una queratitis inmunomediada por exposición a rayos UV. También es importante disponer del equipamiento oftalmológico correcto para realizar una exploración oftalmológica completa. Para una exploración oftalmológica es muy importante disponer de una buena fuente de luz, y un transiluminador con una lámpara de finnoff la proporciona. Una lámpara de hendidura manual también es un equipo importante para una exploración oftalmológica completo, así como una lente de oftalmoscopía indirecta (28D para pupilas no dilatadas y 2,2D para pupilas dilatadas en perros y gatos).
