Abstract
Livestock fanning is an important part of the livelihood since 80% of the households
own livestock in rural Nepal. Extensive ruminant production prevails in the lower altitudes of the mid-hills, however, transhumant ruminant production is practiced in the higher altitude areas. Yaks( Bos grunniens) are the only domestic animals, which survive and thrive in the high Himalayan region of Nepal. They are the prime source of milk, meat, wool and are also used as pack animals for the expeditions in the Himalayas. Yak skins are used for making bags, sacks and other materials. Fibres are used for making ropes and blanket( "radi") . Yak steak( dried yak meat) is quite popular among the tourists. The milk is used to produce various products like cheese, butter and Churpi locally and are sold in the market. This is an important means of livelihood of the people living in the high mountain areas. These people are adapting the yak and Chauri farming practices since generations. It is estimated that there are about 69 thousands of Yak and Chauri in 28 districts of Nepal. [...]
