Abstract
Yak pastoralism in Pakistan is confined to the higher altitudes i. e. 3 500 - 4 500
meters above sea level( masl) of the Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral stretching over part of the Karakoram Pamir Landscape( KPL). It is practiced in six out of the seven districts of Gilgit-Baltistan where yak has earned great cultural and livelihood niche. In this region, yaks were historically domesticated for transportation, meat, milk and hides. Yak milk, butter, cheese, yogurt and meat are mostly consumed at household level because of less market opportunities. In the absence of any reliable census data,25 thousand yaks and o. 1 million hybrids( Zo and Zomo, male and female, respectively) are reported in this part where yak is the strategic asset to cope with the economic crisis. Use of handmade goat and yak hair Sharma carpets with attractive indigenous designs is a cultural pride in most parts of KPL on Pakistan side. Yak safaris are key cultural attractions for tourists.
