    In de huidige diergeneeskunde neemt het belang van ziektepreventie op bedrijfsniveau ter vervanging van individuele geneeskunde op dierniveau toe. Een ziekte die massale uitval kan veroorzaken op vleeskalverbedrijven en dus de nodige aandacht verdient is salmonellose, veroorzaakt door de serotypes Salmonella Dublin en Salmonella Typhimurium. Een belangrijke pijler in dierziektepreventie is bioveiligheid, een begrip dat alle maatregelen omvat die de insleep van ziekte op bedrijven enerzijds (externe bioveiligheid) en de verspreiding van ziekte op bedrijven anderzijds (interne bioveiligheid), voorkomen. Kan ik een ronde Salmonella-vrij opstarten? Kan ik de verspreiding van Salmonella tussen groepen op het bedrijf voorkomen? Op basis van een reeds gekende gestructureerde en methodologische aanpak van bioveiligheid op varkens- en pluimveebedrijven en resultaten van een lopend onderzoeksproject omtrent bioveiligheid op rundvee- en vleeskalverbedrijven wordt in functie van Salmonella het vleeskalverbedrijf doorgelicht op vlak van bioveiligheid. De verschillende transmissieroutes (direct en indirect diercontact, orale opname en inhalatie) worden besproken in relatie tot mogelijke maatregelen die de besmetting van kalveren kan verminderen of voorkomen. Naast aankoop en het mengen van kalveren van diverse herkomst komen aspecten zoals compartimentering, leeftijdsgroepen, bedrijfskledij, reinigen en ontsmetten aan bod.
