Introduction
Tuberculosis and tumors are two major health problems in both humans and animals; and there are still many question marks in the association between these two important diseases(1). In this study, progressive malignant mixed tumor and productive tuberculosis were observed simultaneously in 8 years old, terrier, female dog.
Material and method
After mastectomy of the left mammary chain; removed tissue was brought for pathological examination. For the histopathology examination, specimens stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Masson’s trichrome stain and Ziehl-Neelsen for acid-fast bacilli detection. Microscopically, atypical neoplastic cells, caseation necrosis located in the center of tubercle and tubercle bacilli were seen. After these findings, Mycobacterium spp. was investigated at the same sample and was confirmed by PCR amplification.
Results and conclusion
According to the literature, coexistence of tuberculosis and tumors in domestic animals was previously described only in one goat. They indicated that tuberculosis predisposed to the tumor(1) . Concomitant tuberculosis and neoplasm in a dog has not been reported before. In humans, observing tumors and tuberculosis at the same time and the same organ causes difficulties in diagnosis(2) . Because of this, tuberculosis should be also considered if there is a tumor in a dog(3) .
