Objective:
The aim is to report the results of the clinical application of bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) and cultured bone marrow stromal cells (cBMSCs) in veterinary orthopaedics for treatment of some orthopaedic lesions in small animals. Data will be also supported by same experimental studies. Stem cells were used to promote the healing of spontaneous pathologies alone or on different scaffolds. Scaffolds were made of resorbable bioceramic based on silicon stabilized tricalcium phosphate (TCP) or titanium to promote the repair of a large-sized defect in dogs with different orthopaedics lesions.
Materials and methods:
In the experimental trial eighteen 2-year-old ewes were used. Animals were sacrificed at 3, 6, and 12 months. Bone formation and scaffold reabsorption were evaluated by sequential x-ray studies, CT scans, histology, immunohistology, microradiography, and quantitative analysis of x-ray studies (optical density) and microradiographs (percentage of bone and scaffold area). The clinical study in small animals regarded 5 dogs with first grade of UAP, 12 dogs with DJD of the elbow secondary to FCP, 2 cases of DJD of the shoulder joint, 1 case of OCD of medial condyle of the femur and 29 cases of Legg-Calvé-Perthés disease.
