Introduction
The entire TEAM in a cardiac surgical unit is responsible
for the perfect execution of a specific role. An active, efficient and effective contribution is a necessity to success. Each individual makes a difference. It is important to create a structure of principles for the team and know the specifics for each individual’s role.
Essential members of the cardiac surgery team and their roles
Anesthesiologist. The anesthesia provider is an indispensable member of the perioperative team. Adequate communication between the surgeon and the anesthesia provider is essential and protects the patient. Communication regarding the start and end of the surgery, the need for particular analgesic procedures or other interventions should be always communicated with the anesthesia team.
Cardiologist. The role of the cardiologist is active throughout the entire procedure with each patient. During the initial assessment, the cardiologist’s responsibility is to assess suitability of the specific procedure for the patient. The team approach is not limited to the OR, proper patient assessment should precede the OR procedure with accurate communication with the owner/s and referring veterinarian/cardiologist. During hospitalization, the cardiologist can provide crucial contribution to the case management during both the pre and postoperative phase.
