Abstract : The presentation will outline the various respiratory anomalies of the nasopharynx and their treatments. Nasopharyngeal instability is one of the more frequent causes of airway obstruction in both racehorses and sport horses. Most of these are dynamic obstructions occurring during exercise and therefore videoendoscopic exams during exercise are critical to recognizing the abnormality(ies). The etiopathogenesis of these nasopharyngeal dynamic obstructions are not fully understood. Some are associated with neuromuscular failure of which sensory deficit may play a larger role than originally identified. Some obstructions are secondary to a structural deformity of the epiglottic cartilage while other are associated with the actions of the drivers or riders. A review of the treatment options and their reported success will be described. The more recent modification of laryngeal tie-forward to further prevent the occurrence of complications will be described. […]
