PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION
Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) is a highly prevalent Alphaherpesviridae virus that infects horses worldwide. Primary infections with mild upper respiratory disease signs are common in young horses, resulting in establishment of latency with subsequent viral reactivation causing clinical disease and viral shedding during periods of stress. The most serious clinical manifestations of disease are abortions occurring during the third trimester of pregnancy, and sporadic outbreaks of neurological disease (equine herpes myeloencephalopathy or EHM) causing severe suffering and loss of life and leading to extensive disruption of equine activity.
