Testimonials
'A great course for general practitioner level vets - it's thorough and comprehensive and I liked the layout and format of it, with the cases to learn from and apply what you have been taught.' - Geraldine Young BVSc CertSAM MRCVS
'Ideal for new graduates/recent graduates and those who need reassurance that they are thinking along the right lines.' - Aga Zoltowska
'I feel like I became a bit attached to the patients in the course - it was nice following them through their diagnosis and treatment journeys, and there was something unique to learn from each case - a bit like real life. The format is engaging and the variety of activities stops it becoming too dry. It's quite refreshing to have a 'holistic' approach as well, which is obviously so important in real life but can be missed by a lot of CPD.' - Soshannah McCarthy BVetMed (Hons) MANZCVS (Medicine of Cats) MRCVS
Course Outline
Modules are split into two sections; theory and case studies. The theory sections will give you all the knowledge you need to care for the cats you will meet in the case study sections.
1. The Consultation
In the theory section of Module 1, we introduce you to the pathology of diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism, the risk factors and presenting signs (including non-classical clinical signs).
Next, you will meet a variety of cats in your consultation room. Using what you learnt in the first part of the module, you will evaluate each cat's condition and consider whether further investigation is required and which steps you will take next.
2. Investigation of Hyperthyroidism and Diabetes
In this theory section, we look at methods of investigating DM and hyperthyroidism and how to successfully reach a diagnosis.
In the case study section of Module 2, you will have the opportunity to practice your diagnosing skills as you work up each of your feline patients.
3. Treatment and Monitoring
Throughout Module 3, you will learn all about the best practice for monitoring your endocrine patients.
Next, using the knowledge you gathered in the first part of the module, you will safely monitor your patients and consider further investigation or adjustments to their treatment depending on the response, owner compliance and the individual cat's unique needs.
4. Complex cases
The final module focuses on complex cases in which patients respond unexpectedly to treatment or experience complications. In the theory section you will learn how to safely adapt your approach.
Your patients may respond in unexpectedly to their treatment, so you will need to put your new skills in adaptability and decision-making to good use and decide whether adjustments to treatment are required and what they might be.
