This is a 50 minute lecture designed for general practitioners and technicians. The goals of the lecture are to provide practical and realistic goals for diagnosis and management of gastric dilatation and volvulus. There will also be a brief discussion of recent literature that has explored risk factors for GDV compared to historical perceptions. Finally, the options for prophylactic gastropexy will be discussed so that general practitioners and technicians can provide accurate and up-to-date recommendations to owners of large breed dogs.
Gastric dilatation and volvulus is a life-threatening surgical emergency common in large breed dogs. This lecture will cover recognition, emergency stabilization, surgical intervention, and post-operative care, as well as a brief discussion of preventative strategies. Recognizing and stabilizing GDV can be challenging and scary in the general practice setting. The goals of the lecture are to provide practical and realistic goals in these situations. There will also be a brief discussion of recent literature that has explored risk factors for GDV compared to historical perceptions.
