Key information
Presenter: Sam Stewart, DVM
Respiratory distress is a common presenting complaint for cats on an emergency basis. There are multiple underlying etiologies and there is a wide range of comfort level amongst clinicians with handling these cases.
The purpose of this fifty minute lecture is to familiarize clinicians with common respiratory emergencies seen in feline patients (i.e. congestive heart failure, pleural effusion, asthma). Topics covered include basic assessment of the patient, prioritizing diagnostics, and necessary therapeutic treatments. The primary focus of this lecture is identification of the underlying respiratory pathologies and initial stabilization. Further information on long-term management of these patients will also be presented. By the end of this lecture attendees should be comfortable with managing common causes of feline dyspnea on an emergency basis.
