Develop your knowledge and understanding of emergencies seen in the athletic horse. This is a one-part course that can also be taken as part of the Equine critical care course bundle.
This module looks at head trauma, acute lameness and wounds, recumbency and heat exhaustion, including:
Head trauma – signs requiring urgent attention, types of head trauma, history, physical examination, skull factures, basilar fractures, petrous temporal bone fracture, mandible/maxillary fracture, eye injury, and emergency tracheotomy.
Acute lameness and wounds – acute lameness, history, assessment, differential diagnosis, emergency treatment, and wounds.
Recumbency and heat exhaustion – recumbency, differential diagnosis, stuck in ditch, stuck on fence, heat exhaustion, exhaustion, outcomes, heat stress, anhidrosis, exertional rhabdomyolysis, and synchronous diaphragmatic flutter.
Planning and equipment – personnel, facilities, and communication protocols.
