This primary objective of this segment is to review the fundamental concepts of acid-base status and pulmonary function in the horse and provide practice to improve the proficiency of blood gas interpretation. The participant will review the different oxygenation indices (including the a/A ratio, A-a gradient and P/F ratio as a marker of gas exchange efficiency in the lung. The course also reviews the basics of the acid-base physiology and how the blood gas parameters describe define the acid-base status of the patient. The participant will then have eight practice examples that walks them through a systematic approach to interpreting arterial blood gases.
