Summary
Genetic improvement of genetic traits in pigs
This paper reviews and discusses the state of the art of genetic improvement of reproductive traits in pigs. The productivity (pigs weaned/sow/ year) is a mesure of the reproductive efficiency. This productivity could be improved through its components: age at puberty, fertility, prolificacy, and unproductives waste of time. In the improvement process of these traits two complementary strategies are possible: on the one hand, the improvement of the pig management practices, feeding, health, facilities, and animal welfare, and on the other hand, the selection and genetic improvement of the mentioned traits. Prolificacy is the most important trait from a genetic and ecomomic point of view, because of the positive impact on productivity. In the last two decades, the implementation of new strategies of selection for prolificacy (BLUP, selection intensity) has produced important genetic response rates. The new knowledge obtained by pig genome and quantitative genetics research will contribute to new selection strategies, which will be more efficient than the classical one, as the recently proposed “genomic selection”.
