In this series of 11 monographs, authors were chosen because of their proficiency as clinicians or as individuals who have done recent research in the area of their expertise. The goal is to provide veterinarians and others interested in canine infectious diseases with a concise account of the current status of each disease discussed. Where appropriate, each author was invited to provide a brief overview of the subject, including definition of the disease, its natural history and a brief description of the properties of the etiological agent. Also included are important aspects of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of each disease. Salient clinical signs and pathological features also are noted, as well as factors that affect severity of disease or the prognosis. Newer diagnostic methods are included in most discussions. Also included, where appropriate, are current views on prevention and control, including vaccines or vector control.
One chapter focuses on considerations in designing vaccination programs for dogs and does not follow the general format. The author has had wide experience in evaluating vaccines independently and has developed some original views which challenge some of the traditional vaccination practices.
Each subject is discussed according to the perspective of the author, derived from his/her experience, and each assumes responsibility for the content of their contribution. Little attempt was made by the editor to influence content or views of the authors, including those of the editor !
It will be noted that several important infectious diseases are not discussed. The reasons are simple - very little research is being done on canine infectious diseases and funding for such studies is difficult to obtain. One important disease, leptospirosis, was not included because new information is now developing as a consequence of renewed interest in this "re-emerging" disease. It is hoped that this salient omission will soon be added to the series.
It has been a pleasure to work with this group of colleagues and I thank them for their timely contributions and the quality of their work.
