Introduction
Apart from being a major cause of poor welfare, lameness affects the efficiency and profitability of the dairy industry via its impact on both milk production and reproductive performance. An appraisal of the published literature was performed by Huxley (2013) which substantially validated these negative impacts of lameness. Although not peer reviewed, the IRL conferences represent a sharing of current research in the field of ruminant lameness and there have been three conferences since the Huxley (2013) review. The current review of abstracts was intended to capture information from studies that did not progress to peer- reviewed publication and from studies that were completed and presented at conferences after 2013. Alongside this, the key performance indicators (KPIs) used to assess reproductive efficiency across the studies which investigated the impact of lameness on reproductive performance were identified. The aim of this process was to identify current research limitations and to inform future research on the impact of lameness on milk production and reproduction.
Materials and Methods
Proceedings from the eight International Ruminant Lameness Conferences (IRL) from 2002 (Florida) to 2017 (Munich), were screened for content related to the impact of lameness on milk production and reproductive performance. Abstracts which discussed lameness presence/absence as well as either lesion scoring or locomotion scoring as an assessment of lameness were included in the review. Where both milk production and reproduction were discussed within an abstract, the abstract was considered under both topics. Abstracts pertaining to milk yield were categorized into three groups: 1. Positive relationship, 2. Negative relationship and 3. No relationship, according to statistical significance (P<0.05). Abstracts describing reproductive performance were categorized according to the KPIs used for the study. Pregnancy rate and conception rate were amalgamated as “Measures of pregnancy risk” in the current abstract. […]
