In racehorses, respiratory disease is second only to lameness as a cause of poor performance and concern to trainers. Obstructions of the upper airway such as recurrent laryngeal neuropathy and dorsally displaced soft palate are easily diagnosed by endoscopic examination. By contrast, disease of the lower respiratory tract can be more difficult to diagnose in the training stable because the veterinarian is often limited in the number of diagnostic tools that are available. While pneumonia and pleuritis result in a sick animal with a fever and obvious clinical signs of disease, low-grade disease of the tracheobronchial system sufficient to affect performance often does not present obvious clinical signs.
