Equine welfare issues have gained increased attention in recent years for a number of reasons. The United States has experienced and will continue to experience movement away from its agrarian roots; thus the familiarity of the present human population with the animal world continues to change. The collective views on how animals are to be used, housed, and managed is toward a more human-like environment. Ultimately it plays a significant role in the evolution of animal welfare and animal “rights” issues. In many instances the changes have been good, long overdue, and beneficial; however, in some instances, well-intended policy/standards/ regulations have resulted in negative consequences. Our collective expertise and experience is focused on equids; and clearly some aspects of management, training, and use of medication needed re-examination. The challenge is balancing the needs of the horse, the ideals and perception of the public and the preservation of being able to utilize these incredible animals in competition and work. […]
