The equine pharynx is a musculomembranous structure with no direct bony support, located between the caudal end of the soft palate and the larynx. The nasopharynx and oropharynx are separated by the soft palate which is in direct contact with the underside of the epiglottis. Hence, horses are obligate nasal breathers. Functions of the equine pharynx include breathing, swallowing and vocalizing. Many muscles are involved in dilating and constricting this area, and therefore is the nasopharynx very dependent on muscle tone to maintain its patency. Lesions of this area can be responsible for poor performance and respiratory noise.
