Based on observations of family histories (Schaeper, 1939), a genetic basis of RAO has been postulated for over 60 years. Two studies now clearly document the presence of a genetic predisposition for RAO. In the first study (Gerber, 1989; Marti et al., 1991), horses from two studs (German Warmbloods and Lipizzans) were grouped according to their own lung health status and that of their parents. The percentage of offspring suffering from RAO increased with increasing number of affected parents. Thus the relative risk (RR, MantelHaenzel statistics) of developing RAO was significantly increased in offspring with one (RR = 3.2; p<0.05) and, even more so, with two affected parents (RR = 4.6; p < 0.05). Offspring of three RAO-affected and three healthy sires were also investigated. Thirty-nine percent of the 79 offspring of the RAO-sires had a history of RAO versus only 12% of the 74 offspring of healthy sires. Analysis of variance also showed that the sire, the age and the stable environment had a significant influence on the clinical condition of the offspring. […]
